After making an appearance in the College Football Playoff Top 4, the Irish just got an even bigger target on their back. With nothing to lose, Wake Forest will try to be the one that knocks the Irish out of it.

With their lone loss to the number one ranked Clemson, Notre Dame has put itself in a great position to make the Final Playoff.
While people are identifying Stanford as the only ones with a chance to knock the Irish out of it, an unconvincing win in either of their next two games could also do the trick.
Wake Forest
There isn’t a ton to say about Wake Forest other than that they stink. The Demon Deacons lone conference win was a horrific 3-0 win at Boston College. Other than that, they’ve won at Army by 3 and beat Elon 41-3 in their opener.
The bright spot though for Wake Forest has been their defense.
They have allowed just 23 points per game. That typically would be an impressive number in the ACC and enough to pick up some wins.
While the number is less impressive because they haven’t been up against the most daunting offenses, it also hasn’t mattered because their offense has been so poor.

They’ll be up against a Notre Dame that has been exploited from time to time – particularly on the ground.
The Demon Deacons however have struggled on the ground. Kendall Hinton isn’t exactly someone to load the box on. And when teams do, quarterback John Wolford hasn’t made them pay.
The Demon Deacons are bad and their only hope to keep it respectable is to have Notre Dame overlook them. Having lost their starting quarterback and running back, the Irish won’t take for granted that they are still in the mix.
Notre Dame
Even the highest of preseason expectations still had the Irish on the outside looking in for the College Football Playoff.
Once they lost their starting quarterback and running back, it appeared the expectation would be to tread water.
The Irish have done much more than that. They took the number one team in the country to wire on the road and have taken care of the rest of their schedule including wins against Georgia Tech, USC, and Temple.
Having shot their way into the top four this week, the Irish understand that this will only make things more difficult for them. Being in the top four this week means nothing if they don’t take care of business the rest of the way.

The Irish are certainly well aware of the implications their final game against Stanford has. But, these next two against Boston College and Wake Forest could make that game meaningless if the Irish were to slip up.
While Deshone Kizer has far exceeded expectations and CJ Prosise has stepped in modestly for Tarean Folston, the defense has underperformed to a certain extent. That was expected to be the driving force of this team.
Sure, they have played a relatively difficult schedule filled with Power 5 teams. But, they will need to improve if they want to first make it to the playoff and once they’re there, make something of it.
Brian Kelly is well aware of the critics doubting a one loss team in the top four with other undefeated teams on the outside looking in. He also knows they can shut the critics up by winning convincingly in the next two and then beating Stanford in the season finale.
This team has to be thrilled to be in this position after losing Malik Zaire and Tarean Folston. They shouldn’t take it for granted.
