After finishing last season as the 8th worst scoring offense in FBS, the questions for Wake Forest entering this season pertained to how the offense would improve.
Week 1 showed us that those questions still remain after the Demon Deacons managed just 7 points against last season’s 110th ranked scoring defense.

Wake Forest did however sneak out a 7-3 victory over Tulane but can’t rely on winning too many games with just 7 points.
They especially can’t this weekend against Duke who put up 49 points in their opener.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Losers of their last 6 games in 2015, it must’ve felt good for Wake Forest to have that winning taste again.
In a schedule that features several other winnable games, Wake Forest will take any wins they can get as they hope to return to the first bowl game since 2011.
After bringing back 9 offensive starters to start this season, the Demon Deacons surely expected some offensive improvement. They will need it too if they have their eyes on a bowl bid.

While only scoring 7 points is concerning, a closer look at the stats from the game brings even more cause for concern.
Wake Forest didn’t turn the ball over in Week 1 so it wasn’t like they were wasting good drives by turning the ball over without putting points on the board.
The offense totaled ONLY 175 yards against Tulane. Tulane gave up over 410 yards per game last season.
The one touchdown Wake Forest scored came as a result of good field position taking over at their 47 and still required 12 plays to pick up the 53 yards.
On the bright side, their defense was excellent. They held Tulane to just 3 points – despite being on the field for nearly 60 percent of the game.
They also forced a fumble and allowed just 3.1 yards per rush.
They will need to be that good and maybe even better against a Duke offense that should do a better job moving the football.
Duke Blue Devils
Duke did put up 49 points in Week 1 but that was against North Carolina Central. The important aspect of the game was some experience for their new starters as Duke had to replace 11 starters from last season.
Their offense did look effective and efficient in Week 1 as redshirt freshman Daniel Jones took over at quarterback for returning starter Thomas Sirk who reinjured his Achilles in camp.
Jones has the ability to throw and run but will be tested much more against the solid Demon Deacon defense.
The key though is that Jones should have much more confidence and composure coming off a strong opening week performance.

I would expect him to be less effective against the better defense but gain valuable experience as tough defenses in Northwestern, Notre Dame and Louisville await in the coming weeks.
On the flip side, the Duke defense was good but not great last season. They were 47th in the FBS in scoring defense – which was even better if you exclude the 66 points they gave up to North Carolina.
The defense also forced over 1.5 turnovers per game last season. Expect this one to be low scoring as the young Duke quarterback will struggle a bit.

Free Week 2 NCAA Football Prediction
Wake Forest gave us no reason to believe that they can put up points as they struggled against a very poor defense. Duke is starting a new quarterback against a defense that can be stifling.
Don’t expect very many points in this one.

I like Duke to win but it could be a close one. Either way, the game will stay under.
