As every college football fan as heard, the Head Ball Coach at South Carolina has resigned. The Steve Spurrier era at South Carolina has ended.
And, it is ending in the worst way imaginable. The Gamecocks are off to a 2-4 start and Spurrier left in an attempt to get himself out of the way.

In other words, he needed to find a way out of the program that has fallen hard from grace before they fired him.
Spurrier is way too highly respected by the South Carolina program because of what he has done for them for them to ever admit it but they wanted to fire him.
But, the show must go on. The Gamecocks have a game to play on Saturday and the Commodores are coming to town hoping to kick the program while it is down.
Vanderbilt
The Vanderbilt defense has been much improved in 2015 but still only have two wins to show for it.
They did as good of job as anyone slowing down the high powered Ole Miss and Georgia offenses but neither resulted in wins.
Their defense, though, has been relied on week after week to keep them in the game. The Vanderbilt offense has struggled mightily.
A trip to Columbia against South Carolina might make it a little easier. The Gamecock defense has struggled in 2015 surrendering 29 points per game.

Vanderbilt’s offensive success lies in the hands of Johnny McCrary. Commodores fans cringe as they read that but he continues to take snaps for Vanderbilt.
McCrary has accounted for 282.2 yards per game this season – second in the SEC. The Vanderbilt offense this season has been the second best offense in Vanderbilt history in terms of yards per game (412.4). But, they have only averaged 21.2 points per game.
This is due in a large part to McCrary’s inability to protect the football. He has thrown seven interceptions in five games compared to just five touchdowns.
If the Commodores continue to move the football the way they have, they will put up enough points to knock off the Gamecocks.
South Carolina
The Gamecocks will be one of two teams in the country undergoing a mid-season coaching change that people will have their eyes on this week (see Steve Sarkisian – USC).
While the situations are much different, it is always interesting to see how teams react to losing their head coach. The coach that recruited many, if not all, of them will not be on the sidelines with them this Saturday afternoon.
The situation with the Gamecocks is a tricky one too. Spurrier left in the midst of a historically bad season by his standards.
Whether it was his call to leave or the university’s, the Gamecocks are still losing one of the better college coaches of this era.
Spurrier and head coach conversation aside, the Gamecocks don’t have a great football team. Their defense has struggled; their offense has been worse.

The Gamecocks are getting beaten badly by SEC opponents – off to an 0-4 start in conference play. They welcome to town the bottomfeeder of the SEC and are barely favored.
The Gamecocks have won 20 of 24 meetings with the Commodores but the programs are trending in opposite directions. Although Vanderbilt is just 2-3, they have been more competitive in SEC play and are ready to seize the opportunity to pick up their first SEC win since November 23, 2013.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
The Gamecocks are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 conference games.
The Gamecocks are 2-6 ATS since the start of 2014 as home favorites.

The Commodores are 6-3 ATS in their last 9 games after a bye.
Free Week 7 NCAA Football Prediction
The Commodores are getting closer and closer to figuring it out offensively. At South Carolina will be a good opportunity for that. The Gamecocks program is in a tough spot right now and loss at home to Vanderbilt will not help.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Vanderbilt +2.5
Spurrier shouldn’t be held responsible for the state the program is in right now. Recruits don’t pan out. Luck doesn’t go your way. Change needs to happen from time to time.
Spurrier is gone and a new era begins at South Carolina. It won’t start well.
