Saturday’s SEC East grudge match pits two of the conference’s least productive offensive units against one another.
Further complicating matters for each team is their unenviable circumstances at the quarterback position. For Kentucky, Drew Barker will miss another week due to injury.
Meanwhile, Vanderbilt’s Kyle Shurmur will don a protective shield to prevent further eye damage that necessitated his leave in last week’s 17-10 loss to Florida.

On paper, this is a fairly even matchup.
However, Vanderbilt holds a significant defensive advantage.
Furthermore, against mutual opponent Florida, the Commodores greatly outperformed the home-standing Wildcats. Another decisive edge tilting in Vandy’s favor is the confidence borne from last season’s 21-17 triumph over their week 6 host.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Vanderbilt’s stout defense and efficient running game provided #18 Florida with consistent fits.
Unfortunately, the Commodores failed to capitalize on prime offensive field positioning.
Though SEC rushing leader Ralph Webb scampered for 110 yards, a combination of poor offensive execution and stingy UF defense blocked his team from finding paydirt. Kyle Shurmur’s late injury all but sealed Vandy’s fate in the fourth quarter.

While Shurmur’s accuracy may be limited this week, both he and Ralph Webb put forth solid performances in Vanderbilt’s 2015 victory against Kentucky.
The sophomore quarterback threw for two touchdowns, while Webb gained 113 yards on 33 carries. If the duo can produce similar numbers this weekend, Vanderbilt will even its record at 3-3.
Kentucky Wildcats
Opposite mighty Alabama, each of Kentucky’s shortcomings were magnified. Overall, the Wildcats rank 113th in total yards surrendered. Against the nation’s top-ranked team, UK allowed 488 yards.
Kentucky’s defense has been a sore spot all season. Opponents have feasted upon Mark Stoops’ bunch, to the tune of 35 ppg (102nd nationally).

Porous defense combined with an offensive line that’s allowed backup QB Stephen Johnson to absorb nine sacks must be addressed heading into this Saturday’s showdown. Of greater significance will be the performance of featured-back Stanley “Boom” Williams.
In pivotal tilts vs. Florida and Alabama, the Boom has been lowered to 44 yards per game. In addition, Vanderbilt’s run defense (148 per game) has been solid this season.

The winner of this contest will even their record at .500 (3-3) and move one step closer to becoming bowl eligible.
The loser falls to the dregs of the SEC Eastern Division standings. This game could very well be the week’s most intense SEC quarrel.
