Syracuse got off to a great start this season winning their first 3 games, but they have lost their last 2. Now they head south to Virginia where they are a 7-ppoint underdog facing a 1-4 Virginia team.
You may wonder why Virginia, who only have 1 win over William & Mary, are the betting favorites, but the reason is simple, as they have played a much tougher schedule. 3 of their 4 losses have come against teams currently in the top 25 and the other loss was to a legit Pitt squad.
Syracuse is 1-0 in ACC play while Virginia is 0-1.
Syracuse is led by their rushing offense, which ranks 75th in the nation while their passing offense only ranks 106th.
They do have 3 RB’s that each has at least 135 rushing yards on the season, but lead RB Jordan Fredericks only has a grand total of 39 rushing yards in his last 2 games.
QB Eric Dungey was decent in the last Syracuse game, which was a bad 45-24 loss to South Florida, where he passed for 232 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. The 2 leading WR’s for the Orange each has nearly 200 receiving yards and most of their yards have come on big plays.
That is what the Cavaliers have to stay away from in this game, but that may be hard since they only rank 106th in the nation in pass defense.
In their 26-19 loss to Pittsburgh last week Virginia gave up 222 passing yards and 141 rushing yards.
Virginia is led by QB Matt Johns, who does have 6 TD passes in his last 3 games, but also has 6 INT. He does have some weapons at his disposal mainly Canaan Severin and Taquan Mizzell, who each have over 300 receiving yards on the season and each is averaging over 13 yards per reception.
The one player the Orange have to worry about is Mizzell, who is a RB and while he has been solid at pass-catching on the season he has struggled to run the ball.
He has not rushed for over 45 yards in any of his last 3 games and for the season he is averaging less than 4 yards per carry.
The Orange have to forget about their last game against South Florida where they gave up 45 points and were outgained 540 yards to 305 yards.
They will be facing a
Virginia offense that was decent last week in the 7-point loss to Pitt.
For the season Syracuse ranks 97th in the nation in pass defense and 44th in run defense.
