UCLA looks to continue to ride a promising freshman QB to bowl success after a Pac-12 letdown, while Nebraska aims to salvage some measure of respect from an up-and-down season in the Big Ten Conference.
The past two years, the Bruins have started out strong but fizzled when the conference chips are on the table.
Shaking my head. A 5-7 team in a bowl game. Has it really come to this?
The Huskers lone bright spot came on Nov. 7, when they used a last-second heave to beat No. 8 Michigan State, 39-38. It was a big deal because Nebraska does not fare well versus ranked opponents, prior to that win they hadn’t beaten a Top 10 opponent since 2011.
While QB Tommy Armstrong is unquestionably a gifted athlete, his decision making leaves plenty to be desired. That Jekyll-and-Hyde performance often costs Nebraska in tight games.
So much so, in fact, that Nebraska is assured of only its third losing record since 1962.
The program could really use a bowl win to bolster recruiting and get the football program back to its earlier prominence.
While they surrender their share of points, Nebraska remains fun to watch because of a couple of nice targets for Armstrong to deliver the ball to, in WR Jordan Westerkamp and TE Cethan Carter.
While freshman pivot Josh Rosen grabs the headlines, RB Paul Perkins is the central part of UCLA’s offensive game-plan. He’s a future NFL back for sure and, while leading the Pac-12 in rushing last year, he followed it up with a 1,275-yard output in 2015.
Defensive tackle Kenny Clark is also a stud for the Bruins.
Not unlike the Cornhuskers’ offense, the Bruins’ attack has a couple of different dimensions to score points. Supporting a strong running game are a couple of excellent wideouts, Jordan Payton and Thomas Duarte. It surely eases the transition for Rosen.
UCLA must be rather dispirited after getting blown out in the second half of their last game versus crosstown rival USC. What made it worse was that it decided the Pac-12 South.
Southern Cal went on to take the crown, while the Bruins were thwarted for the second consecutive year. Rosen will look to reverse that trend, but it won’t happen overnight.
A consolation prize of a bowl victory would be the best UCLA can manage for now.

Free Foster Farms Bowl NCAA Football Prediction
We should have a game that features plenty of scoring, which is as much as you can ask for in a rather middling bowl game before New Year’s Day.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Over
This will end up being a de facto home game for the Bruins, as Levi’s Stadium is south of San Francisco and a makeable commute for Bruins faithful in the northern portion of L.A. Rosen’s moxie and Armstrong’s penchant for boneheaded plays makes me like the over in this match-up.
