Saturday afternoon sees two struggling Big Ten programs locking horns in “The Birthplace of College Football” at Rutgers. Both teams are fifth in their respective divisions, Rutgers in the East division and Nebraska in the West.
Despite a strong season from QB Tommy Armstrong, Nebraska coach Mike Riley isn’t impressed with how his team’s season has gone, as the Huskers scratch and claw for bowl eligibility.

Yet, Nebraska is riding a gale of momentum after pulling out a one-point upset against Michigan State last week, 39-38.
Nebraska also had a couple of two-point losses the past few weeks to Wisconsin and Northwestern. Understandably, it’s been a frustrating season.
Nebraska
Riley is surely hoping his team’s success against the then-#7 ranked Spartans is enough to get the Blackshirts moving in the right direction. The once vaunted “Blackshirts” defense – and the genesis of the nickname – is letting the team down and is largely responsible for the club’s sub-par record. The “D” is giving up over 29 points per game, which ranks 84th in the Bowl Subdivision.

Armstrong has been his dual-threat self, with over 2,500 yards from scrimmage and 24 total TDs to go with it. Local junior product Ryker Fyfe has been a capable back-up when pressed into duty. What offense Armstrong doesn’t generate is soaked up by RB Terrell Newby (705 yards rushing, five TDs) and veteran WR Jordan Westerkamp (58 grabs, 801 yards, six TDs).
Without a more stout defensive presence, however, Nebraska will continue to be inconsistent.
Rutgers
It has been tough sledding for the Knights ever since they’ve made the transition to the Big Ten a couple of years ago. Rutgers is only 1-5 in conference play, with that lone victory being a 55-52 barnburner against Indiana.
Playing conference big boys Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan the past three weeks, the Rutgers defense has yielded nearly 150 points. That’s the type of thing that gets a defensive co-ordinator (a) going grey early, and (b) fired. The Knights grade out at a miserable 110th in the nation in points against, hemorrhaging nearly 36 per contest.
When Rutgers has the ball, it relies on RB Robert Martin and red-zone target WR Leonte Caroo (24 receptions for 527 yards and nine TDs). Sophomore QB Chris Laviano has been under immense pressure (sacked 18 times) and therefore has not performed overly well.

This adds to a team’s woes where the Scarlet Knights aren’t quite reeling in the same caliber of recruits as many other teams in the Big Ten.

Free Week 11 NCAA Football Prediction
While it’s true that Nebraska’s 2015 season hasn’t gone according to plan, the gap in talent level between these two programs is significant enough to translate to the Cornhuskers cruising to an easy win in Piscataway.
The upset versus MSU has likely buoyed both the team and its fans, so the carryover in momentum will be welcomed in Lincoln, as they try and secure postseason football.
