Dave Doeren and the NC State Wolfpack have a chance to prove a lot in this year’s Belk Bowl against a highly regarded SEC Mississippi State squad.
Doeren’s Wolfpack have made a living on beating inferior opponents but this matchup will be a chance to prove they aren’t just an afterthought in the ACC and at the same caliber as Clemson, North Carolina, and Florida State.
Bulldog quarterback Dak Prescott hopes to end his illustrious college career in a victorious fashion in a bowl game slightly below the caliber of last year’s Orange Bowl berth.
Under Doeren, the Wolfpack are 2-21 against teams that finished the year with a winning record. That doesn’t bode well for them in this one as Mississippi State has posted a winning record this year for the sixth straight season under Dan Mullen.
Quarterback Jacoby Brissett is a special talent but at times this season has been relied upon to do everything. The senior quarterback has seen his running back group decimated due to an injury and a dismissal.
The Wolfpack will have to rely on Brissett again in the Belk Bowl as they have all year. The duel between Brissett and Bulldog quarterback Prescott should be an intriguing one.
The Wolfpack defense will have a tall task with Prescott – he presents a more dominant version of their own Brissett.
NC State picked up just 3 wins in the ACC – which that lack of success doesn’t bode well for a matchup with an SEC foe.
They won just one game against a team that finished with a winning record this season (Eastern Kentucky) and probably boast a home win against Syracuse as their most impressive win to date.
So, Brissett is impressive and definitely entertaining to watch but the completeness of this NC State team is lacking. And Doeren’s historic struggle against winning teams shows he isn’t providing the best preparation for his team.
Dak Prescott has established himself as arguably the best player in Mississippi State history. He has amassed nearly 9000 passing yards and nearly 2500 rushing yards in his time at the school.
He has accounted for 107 touchdowns over his four years – including 35 this season. His 25 to 4 touchdown to interception ratio this season is the best of his career.
He led the Bulldogs to a 10-3 season last season and has the Bulldogs sitting at 8-4 coming into the Belk Bowl. Prescott surely would like to go out with a win and his teammates would surely like to help him to that deserving exit.
The key to the Bulldogs winning this bowl game will be staying motivated for it. The Bulldogs ended last season with an Orange Bowl berth – which is a better bid than this year – but they got run over by Justin Thomas and the Georgia Tech rushing attack.
The bid was a disappointment as the Bulldogs were in a position late in the year to be in the inaugural College Football Playoff. The motivation to send Prescott out on a high note should be enough for the Bulldogs.
While the Bulldogs didn’t have a signature win this season, they did pick up more impressive wins than NC State including conference foes Auburn, Arkansas, and Missouri all on the road. They had LSU on the ropes as well but also dropped games to Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M.
After last season’s 10-2 regular season campaign, this was a slight disappointment for Dan Mullen’s squad. The Belk Bowl will be a chance to make something more of a season that didn’t live up to expectations.

Free 2015 Belk Bowl NCAA Football Prediction
Both teams should be motivated as they have something to prove and want to send their senior quarterbacks out with a win. However, the Wolfpack have struggled against good opponents – not something to pride yourself on.
This NC State program has been mediocre for a number of years and this game against Mississippi State will not put them over the hump. Prescott and Brissett will be a fun duel to watch but Prescott will come out victorious.
6* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Mississippi State -5.0
The NC State defense hasn’t been great and Mississippi State defense has underperformed. A few weeks of rest should help them but you should see a lot of points in this one too. Prescott will finish his great college career in style.
