These two teams had significantly different opponents in their Week 1 matchups.
The Blue Raiders met Alabama A&M and dismantled them 55-0 while the Commodores opened with a conference opponent and lost to SEC rival South Carolina 13-10.

While the Blue Raiders will now be facing a much tougher test, the Commodores don’t get much of a break.
The Blue Raiders figure to be a difficult non-conference opponent instead of these walkovers that SEC teams often schedule out of conference.
MTSU Blue Raiders
The Blue Raiders are returning a lot of their offense from 2015 and played Vanderbilt tight last season, losing at home to the Commodores 17-13.
It took 14 fourth quarter points by Vanderbilt though to pick up that win. The Blue Raiders led 13-3 early in the fourth but surrendered two touchdowns in the final 7 minutes of the game.
Middle Tennessee State was effective in last season’s matchup throwing the football and they’ll look to returning quarterback, Brent Stockstill, to do the same again.

The redshirt sophomore quarterback followed up his 4000 yard 2015 campaign with 329 yards and 5 touchdowns in the opener against Alabama A&M.
That will have to be the Blue Raiders way to success as they ran for just 34 yards on 23 carries against Vandy last season.
The Commodore defense was very sharp in their opener surrendering just 14 first downs the entire game.
Stockstill will be relied upon to throw the ball but most importantly, protect the football. Red zone opportunities will come at a premium so the Blue Raiders will need to capitalize to pull off the upset.
Vanderbilt Commodores
It looked as if Vanderbilt would start off on the right foot with a win over a conference opponent in their opener.
The Commodores led 10-0 at halftime and South Carolina couldn’t get anything going on offense.
The Gamecocks then pitched a shutout in the second half and Elliott Fry hit field goals from 48 and 55 yards with the latter coming in the final minute of the game to lead South Carolina to a 13-10 at Vanderbilt.
A big reason for the Vandy struggles – similar to all of the 2015 season – was their inability to get any passing game going. Kyle Shurmur – who Vanderbilt coaches expected to take a step forward this season – looked awful.
Shurmur completed just 8 of 22 passes for 73 yards. Vanderbilt had to rely on the run game and defense yet again to keep them in the ball game.

It could be a little easier this week against a Blue Raider defense that returns just 5 starters from a 2015 defense that was 95th in the country in passing yards allowed.
Regardless, Vanderbilt can’t expect much in their passing game and will have to rely on running backs Ralph Webb and Khari Blasingame as well as their defense yet again.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Under is 11-1-1 in Vanderbilt’s last 13 games.
- Under is 9-5 in Middle Tennessee State’s last 14 games.
- Under is 13-8-1 in Vanderbilt’s last 22 home games.
- Under is 10-5 in Middle Tennessee State’s last 15 non-conference games.
Free Week 2 NCAA Football Prediction
Despite a poor Blue Raider pass defense, Shurmur won’t light up the scoreboard. The Vanderbilt defense is built to survive in the SEC so they should hold up fine against Stockstill and the Blue Raider offense.
I think Middle Tennessee State could pull off the upset but the game will stay under.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Game total under 45
45 is definitely a low total but that is how Vanderbilt football will be this season. I expect this one to be decided by a late score.
