The 6th ranked team in the nation stays in state, but will travel for their season opening game as the #6 Spartans take on Western Michigan in Week 1. It’s a bit unorthodox to see a top 10 team travel to play inside a MAC school, but the class of the MAC gets a crack that will surely have the fans packed in and loud.
Michigan State will have the tough task of having to compete with Ohio State in the Big 10 and while beating Western Michigan won’t give the any credibility as far as a big win is concerned, a slip up or overlook could result in the Broncos pulling off an epic upset.

The Broncos have gotten the Spartans twice in their head-to-head, but Michigan State holds an 11-2 edge in the series.
Michigan State was dominant team on both sides of the ball last season and will return many starters to their core. As far as Western Michigan is concerned, they were a legit scoring threat last season, but a key loss at the RB position leaves them a bit confused on what to do.
Michigan State
Michigan State has the luxury of returning one the most elite QBs in the nation in Connor Cook.
Cook threw for 3214 yards in 2014 to compliment 24 touchdowns. Although he is considered one of the best in the nation under center, Cook will be playing with a bit of a chip on his shoulder as he was not named a captain during the spring.
Cook comes in following one his most epic comebacks as he threw for 314 yards and led the Spartans to a 21-0 4th quarter against the Baylor Bears in the Cotton Bowl last year.

Cook will be without his best weapons out wide as the Spartans lost both of their top receivers from 2014.
This year, his #1 target will be Macgarrett Kings Jr. The WR had 29 catches in 2014 and can expect to have his name called a lot in the huddle.
Western Michigan
The Broncos were one of the most threatening teams in the MAC last year. However, a couple of bad breaks and untimely turnovers costed them a chance a MAC Championship appearance.
They’ll now bring their prolific offense into the 2015 season.
Western Michigan averaged 34 points last season and returns a majority of their starters. The two main guys returning to Western Michigan are RB Jarvion Franklin and QB Zach Terrell.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
RB Jarvion Franklin rushed for 1551 yards and 24 TDs in 2014. Franklin had 5 different games in 2014 that saw him score 3 touchdowns.
As for QB Zach Terrell, he had 26 touchdown passes in 2014. He’ll have his main targets in Daniel Braverman and Corey Davis back this season.
