A crucial matchup takes shape Saturday afternoon as the #17 Iowa Hawkeyes (6-0) take on the #20 Northwestern Wildcats (5-1) in Illinois. Both teams have had a look at ranked teams so far this year, Iowa winning 10-6 over #19 Wisconsin, and the Wildcats, coming in off a road loss to #7 Michigan, by a score of 38-0.
The Wildcats enter this game having kept up a 5-1 record losing only on the road to #12 Michigan, however it was a shutout loss of and Northwestern seemed to have no answer for Michigan on either side off the ball.

These two teams come in with excellent records, but a lot to prove. This is a Big 10 west conference matchup that will definitely make a huge difference to both teams.
With three teams in the conference at 4-2 a loss for Northwestern could bump them down to a tie for 3rd place, however, a win would tie them for first in the division with Iowa at 6-1.
Northwestern comes in behind quarterback Clayton Thorson.
Thorson has completed 77 of 140 for 817 yards and 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Not a strong passing game from the wildcats, however they have had 310 total carries over the first 6 games. Giving them an average of 51 carries per game.
Their main back, Justin Jackson has seen just under half of those 310 carries at 150 carries. Jackson is averaging 110 yards per game, with 1 touchdown on the season. While it seems to be a run heavy offense for these Wildcats, it seems to be working.
They have earned 7 rushing touchdowns over 6 games, 4 of which have come from Thorson, including a 42 yard rushing TD.
A very ground and pound offense that has been more than successful so far, makes northwestern a strong competitor in this game.
Iowa
Iowa comes into this matchup looking for a big win to maintain an undefeated record, as well as give themselves a a lead for the conference title. Iowa’s offense comes into this contest looking great. Lead by Quarterback C.J. Beathard they look to close out this conference road game with a 7th straight win.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Beathard comes into the matchup 99 of 162 for 1249 yards (avg 208 yds. per game) and 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Iowa is coming in off of 6 straight wins, the most recent being a 29-20 home win over conference rival illinois, that was decided by an illinois fumble with 3 minutes left in regulation.
Iowa also brings a strong running game to Northwestern this week lead by Jordan Canzeri, who has run for 116 yards per game on 22 carries per game.
He’s also added on 9 rushing touchdowns, and 1 receiving touchdown. Judging by these two offenses, Northwestern will have their hands full keeping themselves in this game.
Northwestern
Northwestern is coming into their homecoming game off a loss at Michigan in which they couldn’t seem to find any rhythm. Michigan was able to hold Justin Jackson to just 25 yards on 12 carries.
This week he’ll face an Iowa defense who held #19 Wisconsin to only six points.
The Spotlight will be on the Iowa’s lead running back Jordan Canzeri, who is coming off a season high 43 attempts for 256 yards and a rushing touchdown, as well as 2 receptions for 15 yards and a touchdown.
If he can keep up the level of play, I can’t see Northwestern stopping Iowa.
The Wildcats have shown great play over the first 6 games of the season, however they couldn’t score a single point last week against Michigan’s defense.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
With the offense playing solid for Iowa, and the defense holding strong, I feel they will dominate this matchup and easily go into week eight with a (7-0) record.
