This ACC matchup features two teams who have underperformed their expectations so far and are looking at each other as an opportunity to get back to where they expected to be.
Georgia Tech’s dramatic win against Florida State likely has them feeling better about themselves after losing five straight.

After opening with two straight losses to ranked teams, things haven’t gotten much better for Virginia. They’ll look to pick up their second ACC win of the year against a team that has had their number recently.
Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets win over unbeaten Florida State last weekend can’t hide how much they have struggled this season. After picking up blowout wins in their first two games against Alcorn St and Tulane, the Yellow Jackets lost their next five.
They have been losing to good teams though. They just are losing games that many expected them to win when they entered the season as the AP ranked number 16 team in the country.

The bright spot for the Yellow Jackets is that they will be playing a Virginia team this week who they have dominated the last three years. They have beaten Virginia three straight years all by double digits.
But, quarterback Justin Thomas did struggle running the ball against the Cavaliers last year. He threw for three touchdowns though which is unusual for Thomas as he mostly does his damage on the ground. But his rushing struggles against Virginia are concerning.
He ran for just 3 yards on 14 attempts last season against the Cavaliers.
Thomas can’t be relied upon to air it out and make plays. When the Yellow Jackets find themselves down, it is difficult for him to drop back and throw the ball effectively to bring them back.
When Georgia Tech is able to stay one dimensional with their run game and occasionally run a play action pass, Thomas can make plays through the air.
As a pocket passer though, he is often too uncomfortable.
Thomas and the Yellow Jackets will need to get their running game going early and grab a lead if they want to knock off the Cavaliers on the road.
Virginia
After putting together a strong performance in an overtime win against Syracuse, Matt Johns really took a step back last week. Johns threw four interceptions and lost a fumble and really gave the Cavaliers no chance to win the game.
The Cavalier defense has surrendered 34.7 points per game which is another difficult thing to overcome.
Their defensive play, quarterback play, and recent performances against the Yellow Jackets don’t provide Virginia with a lot of confidence entering this one.

If they can keep Thomas in check like they did last year though, they will give themselves a chance. Everyone knows what they’re getting when they play Georgia Tech. They are going to line up and pound the triple option offense all game long.
If the Cavaliers get a lead and force them to drop back and pass a little bit, they will be much better off.
This is a Georgia Tech team that is coming off a huge win over Florida State and looking to get themselves back to a bowl game.
The Cavaliers will have to be at their best in order to win this one.
