Both the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Elon Pheonix had their fair share of struggles last year, between Elon getting blown out about every game, and Wake Forest riding a 3 – 9 record to close to 2014 – 15 season.
This is an uphill battle for a pedestrian Elon team, on the road against a hyped up Wake Forest team in their home opener.

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson stated in a preseason press conference that Wake Forest football is in a “long-term rebuilding process”, meaning it’s going to be another very, very long season for sophomore quarterback John Wolford.
Even with all of Wake Forest’s problems in the off season as well as the preseason, they will no doubt be the favorite to walk away from this match with a win.
Elon
No matter who features at QB for Elon, they will be new, either red-shirt freshman Connor Christiansen or freshman Daniel Thompson.
Demitri Allison will be back as one of Elon’s top receivers. Elon will also return two of their top defensive players, middle linebacker John Silas and safety Chris Blair, together they totaled 198 tackles last season.

The teams leading returning rusher, Tracey Coppedge will be back for Elon, he collected 663 yards last season.
Wake Forest
This is definitely going to be another long season for the Wake Forest squad. Sophomore quarter back John Wolford threw for 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season.
Coach Dave Clawson will be looking for more out of his QB, but that could prove to be difficult again.
John Wolford got sacked 48 times last season, an average of 4 times per game, for a total yard loss of 352 yards. As a team Wake Forest only had 28 sacks last season.
Things just got a lot worse for the Demon Deacons as well with receiver Jared Crump recently suffering from a torn ACL, Crump had 32 receptions in 2014.
Wake Forest will be returning seven starters on the defensive side of the ball, with 3 of the 7 collecting 100 sacks or more last season.

NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Elon is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games on the road
- Elon is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games
- Wake Forest is 1-7 SU in its last 8 games
- The total has gone UNDER in 17 of Wake Forest’s last 24 games
Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
Both teams will absolutely struggle this year, no doubt about that, but in this match-up Wake Forest will come out aggressive and shut down Elon’s offense.
Wake Forest is hoping Wolford can throw more touchdowns than interceptions this game, that would be a good place to start.
