Colorado and Colorado State will tangle on Friday night for their annual Rocky Mountain Showdown. Historically, this has been a rivalry that has been dominated by the Colorado Buffaloes as they possess a record of 63-22-2.
However, of late, this has been a very even and competitive series. They have split the last four games two apiece and Colorado is only 6-4 in the last ten games.
Colorado State Rams
Colorado State’s offense will carry the Rams this season. Quarterback Nick Stevens is back, four offensive linemen are back and the Rams will bring back halfbacks Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews.
The defensive side of the ball will probably hold the Rams back from seriously competing in the Mountain West and probably hold them back from defeating their in-state rival.
The Rams will be starting from ground zero as they are installing a new defense and replacing eight starters.
Colorado has a strong defensive unit that should keep them in games and be a bit of a pest in the Pac-12. There is a lot of depth and experience everywhere you look.
On the defensive line, junior Jackson Leo and senior Jordan Carrell will be the ones to keep an eye on, but don’t forget about junior Timothy Coleman and sophomore Jase Franke.
The linebacking core is strong with senior attacker Jimmie Gilbert, sophomore Rick Gamboa, and senior Kenneth Olugbode leading the way.
Last, but not least, is the secondary which is the strongest part of this defensive unit. Senior shutdown cornerback Chiodobe Awuzie is one to watch for as the season progresses along with senior strong safety Tedric Thompson and free safety Ryan Moeller roaming around back there.
The offensive unit will be something to keep an eye on, particularly the quarterback position. Senior quarterback Sefo Liufau was injured last year and has been rehabbing all offseason.
If he can’t play, then the Buffaloes will have to scramble and currently freshman redshirt Steven Montez is the backup.
If Montez starts, I like Colorado State in this game, straight up and I most certainly like them to cover.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
This is a game of a contrasts. Colorado State’s strength should be their offense and Colorado’s strength should be their defense. These Rocky Mountain Showdown games have been closely contested the past number of years now.
I don’t think this year will be any different.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Colorado State +8 ATS
The line opened up at ten and has dropped to eight. I still see a lot of value in that line for Colorado State as I believe this will be a one possession game.
I like Colorado State to cover regardless, but if Leafau is unable to play, I like the Rams to win straight up and I would take the under. This will be a game to monitor as the week progresses, but for now, the best bet is just taking the points.
Colorado State at +8 to cover.
