HANDICAPPING 2015 WORLD SERIES FUTURES
The new year is upon us, and it brings bettors many more opportunities to cash in. With the slate of games having slowed down somewhat, it’s a good time to take another look at the futures board for chances to beat the books on some long-term plays, with odds that haven’t seen much action recently.

The MLB season is still months away, but as teams tinker with their rosters, the alert bettor can beat the books to the edge found within these transactions. Here’s a look at three top teams, three mid-level teams, and three long shots, with a recommended pick from each category.
San Francisco Giants 8-1
Every other year belongs to the Giants, and this is an even-numbered year. The additions of Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija bolster an already strong rotation, which now figures to make minced meat of N.L. West bats. It would have been nice to see them add another bat, though.

Boston Red Sox 8-1
The Red Sox haven’t been the least bit shy about spending money in recent years, and now they have David Price to show off to the rest of the A.L. East. The team’s lineup is as good as there is in baseball, so keeping runs off the board with guys like Price will be key.
Washington Nationals 10-1
Every year seems to be the Nationals’ year. Now a little out of the spotlight, it will be interesting to see how the team handles things with the pressure off to a degree. Losing some of the media’s attention should only do them good.

Los Angeles Dodgers 14-1
The Dodgers weren’t able to find somewhere to throw all the money that would have gone to Zack Greinke. Scott Kazmir will have to do. Some work still needs to be done in filling out their lineup, and now their rotation as well.
Toronto Blue Jays 16-1
The Blue Jays have been all about the flashy transaction in the last 365 days, but new leadership is going to change that. Even still, their murders row lineup is still in place, and J.A. Happ will help eat up some innings at the back end of the rotation.
St. Louis Cardinals 16-1
The Cardinals seem to typically fair better in the offseason than they did this year, when they were blown out of the water by the Cubs. But the division still runs through St. Louis. Mike Leake was a decent pickup, as was Jedd Gyorko.
The play: Blue Jays 16-1
Los Angeles Angels 25-1
It feels like it’s been a while since the Angels have made a big splash in the offseason. Yunel Escobar will have to do this year. But they have the best player in baseball in Mike Trout, and Albert Pujols still has a few good years left in the tank.
Seattle Mariners 40-1
The pieces seem to more or less be in place for the Mariners, who just need to figure out a way to get everyone pointed in the same direction. No flashy signing this offseason, but Adam Lind is a sneaky good bat to have in the middle of the lineup against righties, and Wade Miley and Steve Cishek add depth to the rotation and bullpen, respectively.
Chicago White Sox 50-1
No team is less afraid to make a big move than the White Sox, and they pulled off a big trade in which they acquired Todd Frazier from the Cincinnati Reds. He joins offseason acquisitions Dioner Navarro and Brett Lawrie in what should be a more potent lineup.
