HAWAII vs. NOTRE DAME FREE PICK
Notre Dame (6-6) is trying avoid back-to-back losing seasons for the third time in 120 seasons while the (7-6) Hawaii Warriors are trying to show they can beat a big-name program, something they haven't done all year. The Warriors had that chance last season but were pounded by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl and finished 12-1 and then coach June Jones left for SMU, the athletic director was fired and players left early for the NFL.Coach Greg McMackin was able to restore stability and confidence with a rebuilt offense that struggled to a 1-3 start when at the time coach McMackin angrily declared that his team would make it to the postseason and Hawaii is playing their best football right now. Notre Dame opened the year 4-1 with high expectations but the Irish faltered going 2-5 the rest of the way plagued by turnovers. The Irish averaged nearly 30 points a game in South Bend compared with almost half that on the road. Coach Charlie Weis will be calling the offensive plays as quarterback Jimmy Clausen and the Notre Dame receivers got out of sync two-thirds into the season witnessed by Clausen's 41 yards passing against USC in the regular-season finale.Notre Dame's ground attack wiil be key. In their six wins, the Irish rushed for at least 100 yards in every game except Stanford and averaged 164 yards. In its six losses, the only time the Irish broke 100 yards was in overtime against Pittsburgh and the Irish averaged 62.8 yards. On defense, the Irish will get help by the return of linebacker Brian Smith and will be looking to pressure Warriors quarterback Greg Alexander as Hawaii has allowed an NCAA-leading 48 sacks. Since taking over as the starter six games ago,Alexander has thrown for 1,533 yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions while Hawaii is 7-1 when scoring 20 or more points.Hawaii and Notre Dame have met twice with the Irish winning both games by a combined seven points. Notre Dame has lost its last nine post-season games and Hawaii will make its sixth bowl appearance in the last seven years and seventh in the last 10 years. Seven of Hawaii's 13 regular season opponents are playing in bowl games including two who'll be playing in BCS bowl games,Florida and Cincinnati in which they only lost 24-29 on December 6th. Greg Alexander is a hot quarterback averaging 285.5 passing yards while throwing for multiple touchdowns in Hawaii's last four contest. These are two teams going in different directions at the end of their seasons plus the Warriors are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog. Hawaii and their hot quarterback get their 5th straight cover as an underdog and win outright at home tonight against the Irish.
