Cincinnati +3 over GREEN BAY

All eyes will be on Packers' QB Aaron Rodgers on ESPN's Monday Night Football, as the new starting signal-caller for Green Bay and his team host the Bengals in the preseason opener for both clubs.

Rodgers has stepped into a blazing-hot spotlight due to the drama in Green Bay this summer. After initially being ordained Green Bay's starting quarterback following Brett Favre's retirement in March, Rodgers was subsequently forced to endure a daily dose of chatter relative to Favre's desire to return to the Pack over the past month. The trade of Favre to the New York Jets last week put an end to any would-be quarterback controversy concerning Rodgers and Favre, but the pressure is now even greater. Any sign of struggle from Rodgers on Monday, even in the brief time he is expected to play, could elicit some anguish on the part of the Lambeau Field faithful.

The Favre-less Packers enter this game with perhaps the weakest QB rotation in the NFL. Rodgers will be followed in the lineup by rookies Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, each of whom will be making their debut in a Green Bay uniform.

One of our NFLX strategies is to play AGAINST a team with rookie QBs that will see significant playing time, such as the 2nd half of a game, especially in Week 1. These young QBs are unfamiliar with the offensive scheme and speed of NFL defenders often give them trouble.

Quarterback Carson Palmer should play a series or two for Cincinnati before yielding to backups Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeff Rowe, and possibly Palmer's brother, Jordan. While not the strongest QB rotation, it will give Cinci 2 QBs who have started NFL regular season games and very few snaps should be taken by the only rookie, Jordan Palmer. This gives the Bengals a decided edge with their QB rotation.

Mike McCarthy says he plans to play the Green Bay Packers’ starting offense a “traditional” number of snaps here, but he has to hope their production is anything but. The #1 offense has gotten off to horrendous starts in each of the Packers’ preseason openers under McCarthy, with departed quarterback Brett Favre struggling as much as anyone. In McCarthy’s debut in 2006 at San Diego, Favre played 20 snaps and was sacked twice and hit at least three more times as he completed 5 of 10 passes for 66 yards. The offense managed four first downs, but its last and only substantial drive ended with a failed fourth-down conversion from the Chargers’ 14-yard line. It was worse last year at Pittsburgh. Favre played 13 snaps, was 2-for-7 passing for 7 yards and had a fumbled exchange from center. The offense failed to generate so much as a first down in four possessions.

Additionally, the Packers are being hit hard by minor injuries. A total of 16 players missed at least one practice the last two days and defensive tackle Daniel Muir got kicked in the shin toward the end of Saturday's session. The injuries have made for some interesting combinations along the offensive and defensive lines with starters on both sides missing.

"We're definitely going to have a problem there," McCarthy said of the defensive injuries.

Cincinnati will have some players sitting out as well, but not nearly as many key players as Green Bay. The Bengals have been doing a preparation for the Packers, and a little bit of gameplanning in the NFL preseason can go a long ways.

"We have an idea of what Green Bay's going to do," new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said.

Zimmer is expected to blitz the defense more this season in order to prop up what has been a deficient pass rush, a situation that will put more pressure on a young secondary. All parties must pick up his scheme quickly, so we look for the Bengals to work on the blitzing here, which should cause all sorts of problems for the Packers' young QBs.

The Bengals are expecting a "regular season" atmosphere under the primetime lights and should ready, as most road teams have been under similar circumstances. We have an NFLX POWER SYSTEM that states: Play AGAINST a Monday Night Football TV home favorite not off a SU or ATS loss in its last game. This system is now 23-8 ATS in its last 31 qualifying games.

It's been an unusual training camp to say the least for Green Bay. Of course the big story was Brett Favre, but Ryan Grant was holding out until last week. He quickly got back on the field, but now has a minor injury. Another NFLX strategy we employ is to play AGAINST a team dealing with a major distraction. Should a team suffer a major distraction in August that takes the focus off the field, we expect an especially uninspired and sloppy effort.

The Packers situation with Favre has to be one of the all-time biggest preseason distractions in the history of the NFL. Whatever off-season controversies the Bengals have had pale in comparison, and we look for Cincinnati to come in as the more polished team and come away with the victory.
