Poker comments

I received the following email regarding Tournament play in Las Vegas:

Rick, I've been absolutely loving the poker commentary. I know you usually talk about cash games. I was wondering if there are any regular tournaments in Vegas that have decent structures. So far I like the mega stack series, but they are only run for a few weeks during the year. Are there regular tournaments, with decent stacks, and levels that would be good to play for a change of pace from pure cash games?


My Answer:

The trend right now since the Venetian started deep stack tournaments is now most casinos offer them. Usually during a major tournament many other hotels have tournaments for much smaller buyins. It seems the Venetian is the best. Also from what I have heard the Venetian offers the best value on its weekly tournaments at least as far a stack size.

I dont play tournaments much since I dont feel there is much value in them for the average player. Certainly if your in the top 1% of the tourament players there is value...but even then there are plenty of tournament players that are broke consistently.

The reason I feel is first the variance is monumental. You can go months without cashing in a tournament. And more importantly the house takes out anywhere from 8 to 13 percent!!!!! Thats a very tough rake to overcome.
