Marcus Thames' grand slam highlighted a seven- run third inning, as the Detroit Tigers downed the Seattle Mariners, 9-4, in the middle test of a three-game series from Comerica Park.
Kenny Rogers (4-4) gave up four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Zach Miner and Francisco Cruceta did not allow a hit in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
"I thought he was trying to be too perfect, but he got through it and we got enough runs," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said of Rogers.
