The Vancouver Canucks announced Wednesday that Mike Gillis has been named the club's general manager.
"This is an exciting day for the future of the Vancouver Canucks," said team chairman Francesco Aquilini. "Mike's involvement with the National Hockey League dates back 30 years as a player and player representative. We believe that he brings a wealth of experience to this role and will embrace the opportunity to lead our hockey operations department."
Gillis had been an agent for the past 15 years. The 49-year-old began his hockey career as the fifth-overall choice of the Colorado Rockies in 1978. In 246 games over six seasons with Colorado and Boston, he posted 33 goals and 76 points.
The native of Kingston, Ontario takes over for Dave Nonis, who was fired as Canucks' GM earlier this month, shortly after the club ended the regular- season with seven losses in eight games and finished out of playoff contention.
