The Miami Dolphins have come to terms on a multi-year contract with Michigan's Jake Long and will select the offensive tackle with the top overall selection in Saturday's NFL Draft.
The club announced the contract and the selection at a press conference on Tuesday with Long.
"I'm very excited and honored to be able to be part of the Miami Dolphins," said Long. "Now I can just concentrate on football, and don't have to worry about any of that other stuff," he said, referring to his contract being done before Saturday's draft. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Jake was our guy from the beginning," said new Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. "There wasn't a whole lot of debate."
Long will be the first offensive tackle taken No. 1 since the St. Louis Rams selected Orlando Pace out of Ohio State in 1997, and only the third to be chosen No. 1 in the draft's history. Ron Yary was picked out of Southern California by the Vikings in 1968, the only other tackle taken No. 1 since the draft started in 1936.
