The Arizona Diamondbacks were Spring Training favorites to win the NL West Division again, and so far so good in the desert.
Arizona got the season off to a promising start with a win over Cincinnati, but lost the final two games of the series to fall to 1-2 on the season. Manager Bob Melvin then lit a fire under his club's behinds, resulting in back-to-back sweeps of division rivals Colorado and Los Angeles. The D'backs outscored the Dodgers, 23-11, in the series and improved to 7-2 on the young season.
Aces Brandon Webb, Micah Owings and Dan Haren are off to unblemished starts, while Webb and Owings already own 2-0 records. Webb, the 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner, currently has a 2.08 earned run average over 13 innings pitched. He is slated to take on the Rockies for the second time Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Chase Field. Webb defeated Colorado with seven strong innings on April 5 at Coors Field.
In last weekend's series at Colorado, Arizona outscored its slumping National League West rivals by a 20-5 margin.
