`Little David` Antigua Faces `Goliath U.S.` Tomorrow CaribWorldNews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Thurs. May 22, 2008: Officials from the tiny island of Antigua & Barbuda, seen as the `Little David` in the online gaming battle with the Mighty `Goliath` U.S., are set to meet U.S. trade representatives again tomorrow.
The D.C. meeting is again aimed at hopefully ending the U.S.` ban on access to its market by Antigua’s online gaming providers
Antigua officials have won the battle in the World Trade Organization but U.S. trade representatives, including Ambassador Susan Schwab and other officials in the USTR’s office, have yet to bow to the ruling in the ongoing dispute between the two countries. The meeting comes as the time allotted for the conclusion of the current round of talks draws nearer.
If no resolution is achieved before then, the legal trade battle will be automatically resumed. Both Minister of Finance and the Economy Dr. Errol Cort and Antigua and Barbuda’s attorney at the WTO Mark Mendel are hopeful that an amicable resolution would be reached but so far the U.S. seems unmoved by the possibility of the continuation of a protracted battle at the WTO. |
