WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A new Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit has found millions of US taxpayer dollars spent on items that violate government spending policies. During a 15-month time-frame, approximately 40% of purchases charged by United States government employees violated protocol.
The credit cards served as personal lines of credit to pay for sex, lavish meals, entertainment, and gambling debts, auditors said. The employees were suppose to use the credit cards to charge government-business related expenses.
Some of the departments named in the probe include the US Postal Service, the Agricultural Department, and the US State Department.
