Just a few months ago, it appeared Internet gaming had a long, dirty battle before it would gain full acceptance and regulation in the US. Now, varying governments are racing each other to institute regulated online gambling, raising the prickly question of jurisdiction.
The UIGEA bans payments involving interstate online casinos, but exempts intrastate gaming if allowed by the state. Several states have picked up on the clause and plan to license forms of Internet gambling to be conducted inside state borders.
At the same time, Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank is planning to introduce a bill to Congress which would effectively strike the UIGEA, establishing federal regulation of online gaming. He says the bill will be forthcoming within weeks, if not days.
