Default Regulated US Online Gambling May Bring New Age Limits

Momentum is growing toward national regulation of online gambling in the US, bringing questions of what rules would be imposed on licensed Internet casinos. One rule that had been thought settled until recent developments is the age at which to allow legal gambling.

The requirement to be twenty-one is often thought to be a universal standard, but that is hardly the case. Many states allow bingo and poker gambling at eighteen, and then allow slots and casino gambling at twenty-one. Some states already permit casino gambling at eighteen, such as Oklahoma. Cruise ships often permit full casino access at eighteen.

Online casinos vary between the two numbers as well. Depending on the locality in which they are based, Internet gambling sites have different rules regarding age limits.

With legislation pending to bring open, regulated Internet gambling to the US, there is a high probability Congress will set a national age limit. While many might assume that limit to be twenty-one, recent proposals in Florida and Nevada make that presumption premature.
