One of the most intense weeks in NCAA Basketball – some would say in all College sports – is upon us, as the conference championships get underway, leading to Selection Sunday, when the field for March Madness will be determined.
On Thursday, the No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels open post-season play in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, and the Pittsburgh Panthers do the same in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament. And the Big East Tournament championship game takes place at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
Tar Heels back at No. 1 for ACC Tournament
The No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels will play either the No. 8 Virginia Tech Hokies or the No. 9 Miami Hurricanes in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Thursday (12 pm ET, ESPN2). The Tar Heels won the regular-season ACC title with a 79-71 win over No. 7 Duke Blue Devils Sunday.
No. 2 Pittsburgh awaits opponent in quarterfinals
The No. 2 Pittsburgh Panthers will play one of the three teams – West Virginia, Notre Dame or Rutgers – in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Thursday (7 pm ET, ESPN). Pittsburgh beat then-No. 1-ranked UConn Huskies on Saturday to take over No. 2.
Big East Tournament champ decided Saturday
The Big East Tournament championship game takes place at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night (9 pm ET, ESPN). One of the strongest conferences in NCAA Basketball, the Big East boasts three of the nation’s top five teams: North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Connecticut.
