The latest survey data on remote gambling participation, published by the UK Gambling Commission, has shown that the proportion of UK adults participating in remote forms of gambling has increased to 9.7% for the year to December 2008, up from 8.8% in the previous year and 7.2% in 2006.
The growth in remote gambling is explained largely by increased online participation in the National Lottery. Excluding the National Lottery, 5.6% of respondents said they had gambled either via the Internet, mobile or interactive TV in the past month. This compares to 5.2% in 2007 and 5.1% in 2006.
Internet gambling continued to be the most popular method of remote gambling participation at 7.8% of respondents compared to 6.9% in 2007 and 5.2% in 2006. Mobile gaming ranked as the second most popular with 2.9% of adults having participated versus 2.5% in 2007 and 2.2% in 2006, while use of interactive TV for gambling increased slightly to 2.1%, from 1.8% and 1.7% in previous years.
