Freerolls aren’t terribly great practice for real money games, in my opinion. So you’re playing for the prize. Freerolls generally offer real cash and seats to other tournaments.
In a freeroll, you are wagering nothing, except the chance to win a prize. You’ve put no money of your own into the freeroll, so people play accordingly – loose and reckless. People will play horrible hands simply because they don’t care if they bust, and they can win a lot of chips if they get lucky.

A very common mistake that amateur players make is not being selective enough with their starting hands. Don't fall into the common trap of thinking that ‘any hand can win'. Although this is true, some hands are more likely to win than others and will help you win more money, whilst others will help you in losing more money. So be selective about which hands you play.

Be observant enough to locate the “tells”. In poker, a ‘tell’ is the physical reaction, habit or behavior of a person that gives his or her opponents information about their present hand.

You might think that starting hand strategy in poker is all about getting big cards and winning with them, but that's only half the story. The other half of the story is avoiding getting yourself into situations where you call down with weak cards.

Be careful when bluffing bad players, as they may not know when they are beaten! Even though you may present yourself as having a stronger hand, they simply may not care or not even notice, as they have not perfected a strategy of their own.

Bodog Poker Open IV Winning Poker Strategy Tips

Bodog’s biggest online poker tournament of the year is finally here! The Bodog Poker Open IV Championship Series and Bodog Poker Open IV Contender Series start Nov. 1-8 and the prizes are too cool:
    • Feature spread in major poker Magazine!

    • Extensive coverage in the Bodog Poker articles section!
    • High-profile feature status in Bodog Beat!
    • The coveted Bodog Poker Champion title!

To help you achieve ultimate success, here are a few winning tips:

Be selective in the early stages of the tournament. Starting chip stacks are generous enough for you to play a tight game, waiting for premium hands or strong position plays with medium strength holdings. You should bet hands that you feel are in the lead for value, and keep bluffs to a minimum. Try to avoid getting all your chips in without the absolute nuts, and try to win medium-size pots that don't put your tournament life in danger.

Register now for the Bodog Poker Open IV Championship Series and Bodog Poker Open IV Contender Series before it’s too late.

Be sure to check out the Bodog Poker Open IV schedule for information on all the events.

Though SNG tourneys usually last less than an hour you have much time. There is no pressure at all at the beginning so you just have to rely on strong starting hands, let your opponents think that you are rock, as the tournament progresses you will open up your game and play more aggressive.

Do not show your cards unnecessarily unless you have a good reason for doing so and you are also confident that you can alter your subsequent play in such a way that revealing your cards will not hurt you.

The block bet is used when first to act and entails making a small bet designed to prevent your opponent from making a bigger one (possibly so big that you can not profitably call). There are two scenarios where using a block bet can be effectively used. Firstly when drawing (for example to a flush) and secondly when you have a good - but not great - hand on the end and would like to prevent your opponent making a bet you do not want to call.
