Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox (MLB) - Apr 6, 2009 3:05 PM EDT

Entering this season, the Chicago White Sox are a year older while the Kansas City Royals are a year closer to a division crown. The two will meet Monday afternoon at US Cellular Field in the opening game of the 2009 season for both clubs.

In a division with no clear cut favorite, both clubs have to like their chances heading into the season. The White Sox feel they have the right mix of old and young in their lineup and rotation to make another run at a title. The Royals feel they have made the right additions to their lineup (Coco Crisp and Mike Jacobs) to mesh well with their young and talented pitching staff.

Southpaw Mark Buerhle will make his 7th opening day start for the White Sox and why not. He’s been solid for them year in and year out and stands alone as the clear cut ace on the staff. Buerhle was 3-2 against the Royals in 2008. He struggled in the spring however going 0-2 with a 6.50 ERA allowing 13 earned runs in only 18 innings pitched. I think we could see that carry over to start the season.

Gil Meche will make his third opening day start for the Royals when he toes the slab Monday afternoon. The Royals won his first two opening day starts. Meche has been the Royals most consistent pitcher. He has never missed a start and has grinded out a ton of innings. Meche didn’t allow a home run all spring while going 3-0.

The Royals were a cash cow last season against southpaws going 36-24 (+22 units) against lefties. Meche has been solid against the Pale hose, going 7-3 in his career against them including 4-2 at US Cellular.

The Royals finished last season winning eight of their final nine road games. Couple that with a solid spring (18-14) and I think we could see a strong start from the Kansas City Royals beginning Monday afternoon. Play on the Kansas City Royals for 1 unit.

Michigan State vs. North Carolina (NCAAB) - Apr 6, 2009 10:15 PM EDT

There is no way in Hell, that Michigan St and Tom Izzo will try and run with North Carolina. Izzo is too good a Coach and the Spartans are too good of a defensive team. Have to give Roy Williams and the Tar Heels credit, in that they are actually playing defense this Tournament. Also factoring in the Under play, is that this is both teams players biggest games of their lives, being played in a huge arena not built for Basketball, but Football. North Carolina shot the lights out vs Villanova Saturday and I don't expect that tonight, considering only having one day of rest between games. Playing with only one day off, so far in this Years tournament North Carolina is 2-0 Under (playing Sunday after Friday wins.)In Big Games, Aways think Defense First.
