The National Football League paid for a full-page advertisement in Wednesday's Delaware State News urging residents to oppose legislation authorizing sports betting. Lobbyist W. Laird Stabler III, who represents the NFL and other professional sports interests, says the issue is a top priority for the league.
A community group, the Coalition Against Sports Gambling in Delaware, has also pledged to fight sports betting. The group is headed by former attorney general candidates Ferris Wharton and Carl Schnee and YMCA of Delaware president Michael Graves.
A study commissioned by the Video Lottery Advisory Council last year estimated that Delaware could collect about $70 million annually from sports betting.
