Washington Redskins
Record: 9-7
ATS: 7-7-2
Super Bowl Odds: 45-1
The Redskins rallied late in 2007, coming together as a cohesive unit after the tragic death of safety Sean Taylor. From that, they managed to qualify for the playoffs, sneaking in as the 6th seed and nearly upsetting the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round. During the regular season the Redskins posted a 9-7 record, covering in their last 4 games. Besides the tragedy of Sean Taylor’s death, no other team has had to deal with as much off-season change as Washington.
Stalwart coach Joe Gibbs retired and was replaced by Seattle Quarterback coach Jim Zorn, who was originally hired to be the Redskins’ offensive coordinator and then suddenly given was the reins to the whole team. Zorn brings with him an entirely new set of offensive and defensive coordinators, so a period of transition should be expected. The good news for backers is the Redskins are finally building a team the right way. They used to be among the most aggressive teams in signing free agents by only added one in 2008, Jerome Mathis – who was promptly cut before he even played a down with the team. Instead, they are relying on an excellent offense-minded draft that gives this team a lot more depth and offensive firepower for the future. This season is going to be all about how the team manages the transition.
They have the players for great offense that could help them play over the number more than 7 times, and a solid defense – even if there are still questions to be resolved. Don’t be surprised if this team records a similar record in 2008, but they will be competitive and could be a Super Bowl contender in as few as 2 seasons.
