Seattle Seahawks
2007 Record: 10-6
ATS: 9-6-1
Super Bowl Odds: 25-1
The Seahawks won the NFC West for the fourth consecutive year, ending the regular season at 10-6. The won their first playoff game against the Redskins before bowing out to the Green Bay Packers 42-20. Matt Hasselbeck had an extremely productive season throwing form almost 4000 yards with 29 TDs, while WR Nate Burleson was the primary benefactor by pulling in 9 of them. The only weakness in the Seahawks’ game was the 20th ranked rushing attack and that cost them down the stretch. Former league MVP Shaun Alexander did not get the job done and nobody stepped up to fill the void.
During the offseason, the Seahawks filled that hole via free agency with the signings of Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett, and the release of Alexander. Duckett should add a level of toughness to the backfield that will be a good change of pace from previous years. The Seahawks’ defense was solid in 2007 but the re-signing of Marcus Trufant was key to keeping the squad stable while adding additional key upgrades. With WR Deion Branch potentially starting the season on the injured list, the ‘Hawks will need to find another outside weapon. Losing D.J. Hackett to Carolina forces them to rely on Burleson and the aging Bobby Engram until Branch returns. Head coach Mike Holmgren is entering his final year on the sidelines and the team’s next head coach (Jim Mora) is already working with the team, making for a transition year of sorts in Seattle.
In 2007, the Seahawks posted a 7-9 o/u record and with the potential to once again be more of a pass-heavy offense, this number could improve. Expectations are high for the 2008 season and in a division with 3 other teams that could be better, only one of them has to deliver for the Seahawks to possibly lose their hold on the NFC West.
