A lot of people thought that the Jets’ 10-6 record of 2006 was just a fluke – and it turns out that it probably was. New York crashed to a 4-12 mark in 2007, and only the pitiful Dolphins kept them out of last place in the AFC East. Before the Jets can even think about retuning to the postseason, they’re going to have to answer once big question – who is their starting QB?
Incumbent Chad Pennington was recently replaced by Brett Favre. Pennington was shown the door because of a weak arm and the fact that he was limited to just 9 games last year, and he didn’t exactly endear himself to the Jets’ faithful with his 10 touchdown and 9 interception performances.
Kellen Clemens’s 5 touchdowns and 10 interceptions weren’t any better but he’s the future at the position and the Jets would clearly like him to win the starting job in camp, but that was before the gun-slinger Favre came to town. Favre will have a pair of talented receivers in Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles as targets, while RB Thomas Jones returns as the team’s top option in the backfield.
Jones ran for over 1100 yards in 2007, but he only managed to pick up one rushing TD; backup Leon Washington found the end zone 3 times.
The Jets’ defense wasn’t good enough to make up for their poor offense last season, but that unit should be improved with the addition of top draft pick Vernon Gholston, and outside Linebacker from Ohio State. The Jets also brought in defensive tackle Kris Jenkins and linebacker Calvin Pace in the offseason.
Still, the key to New York’s improvement will be scoring more points, and that will be a task for Favre as the starting QB. Not much pressure for a 38 year playing on a new team for the first time in 16 years, learning a new offense in 3 weeks, not to mention playing in the AFC.
