Most football fans did not give the Giants much of a chance going into the 2007 season. Tiki Barber retired, Tom Coughlin’s job was constantly in jeopardy, and Eli Manning’s habit of fading down the stretch were all major concerns. After starting 0-2, the Giants found a way to regroup, make it into the playoffs as a Wild Card team and ultimately knock off the New England Patriots – the first team to achieve an 18-0 record – in the Super Bowl. New York was a hit with bettors in 2007 as they put up a 10-6 record overall and against the spread.

Looking ahead to this season, Eli is now the man and Steve Spagnuolo is the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL after what his defense did in the postseason. The Giants had a very solid draft; they hope it pays off like last year’s amazing class of players. There is a lot to like when looking at the Giants and there is no reason to believe that Manning won’t continue to grow as a QB. The G-Men did lose 2 key defensive players in Gibril Wilson and Michael Strahan who announced his retirement but the rest of defense is still solid.

Is a second Super Bowl possible? Since last year’s team was one of the biggest upset stories of all time, it might be asking too much. New York has room to improve on an 8-8 o/u record although they managed to go 6-2 on their home field. Looking at the schedule, it contains a lot of tough games meaning the Giants could finish anywhere from a disappointing 8-8 to an impressive 12-4 depending how everything falls.

Then again, if the Giants stumble early, the media will start swarming and players such as Plaxico Burress will begin to mouth off. If that happens the outcome in 2008 could be far different from last season.
