New England Patriots
2007 Record: 16-0
ATS: 10-6
Super Bowl Odds: 7-2
Last year’s edition of the Patriots could’ve been remembered as the record-setting team that turned into the perfect campaign. Instead, they’re going to be remembered as the team that couldn’t quite get the job done. Tom Brady 7 company rolled through the regular season in 1007, winning all 16 games. New England then knocked the Jaguars and Chargers out of the playoffs before running into the Giants team that would upset them in Super Bowl XLII.
Toss in the Spygate scandal, and the Pats’ dream season ended up closer to a nightmare. So what are New England’s prospects for this season? Well, they still have the Tom Brady/Randy Moss combination, so there’s no reason to think that they aren’t going to be great again. All Brady did last season was to throw for over 4800 yards & connect for50 TDs while posting a QB rating of 117.2. Moss caught 23 TD passes while picking up over 1400 yards through the air, and the Patriots were sure to lock him up over the summer for another go-around with the team. New England might not break offensive records again this season, but with Brady, Moss, Wes Welker & Jabar Gaffney leading the way, they’ll definitely light up the scoreboard every time out even if they get minimal contributions from Laurence Maroney and the running game.
On defense, the Patriots added linebacker Victor Hobson in the offseason, but they parted ways with CB Asante Samuel. That could spell trouble for the team’s secondary, especially if the younger players can’t set up their game. However, watch for the Pats to lock up the AFC East division title early in the season once again, and then use the rest of the campaign to get their team ready for another shot at the trophy.
