Miami Dolphins
2007 Record: 1-15
ATS: 5-9-2
Super Bowl Odds: 80-1
When you’re coming off a miserable 1-15 campaign and your most popular player has been spending the spring doing reality television, you know you’re going to need to make a few changes. The Dolphins weren’t expected to be fantastic last season, but they weren’t expected to earn just a single victory over the course of a 16-game schedule. Enter Bill Parcells, the big boss of Dolphins football. Parcells brought in former Dallas assistant Tony Sparano to be the team’s new head coach, canning first-year man Cam Cameron. Sparano is Miami’s 4th head coach in the past 4 season, & the team is hoping that he’ll be able to stick around long enough to lead them back to respectability.
Sparano’s first task will be to figure out who to anoint the team’s starting QB – with free-agent signing Josh McCown, 2nd year pro John Beck & rookie Chad Henne as the 3 options. Henne is likely the team’s long-term solution at the position, but McCown & Beck are expected to battle for the starting gig in camp. Miami’s running game should help take some of the pressure off the QB – assuming Ronnie Brown & Ricky Williams can both stay healthy – while WR Ted Ginn Jr. is expected to build on his inconsistent rookie season.
The Dolphins added Jason Ferguson and Randy Starks to their defense over the offseason, but they also parted ways with veteran LB Zach Thomas. As well, relations between Parcells and Jason Taylor soured when the star defensive end chose Dancing with the Stars over team activities this spring. Taylor is expected to be gone before the season starts. Miami only managed to win once last year, so unless they somehow manage to throw up a donut in the victory column this year there’s nowhere for them to go but up.
