Kansas City Chiefs
2007 Record: 4-12
ATS: 7-8-1
Super Bowl Odds: 140-1
It was good to be a Chiefs fan last year when the team started out 4-3, but not so good when they lost their last 9 games to finish the season with a 4-12 record. So is that going to be rock bottom for the Chiefs franchise that is used to being a playoff contender every season? That’s going to depend on how well the offense develops, and how well the defense can get along without star defensive end Jared Allen.
Kansas City’s offense managed to score just 226 points last season, the lowest total in the entire AFC. Playing a big role in that lack of punch was Larry Johnson’s broken foot, which kept him off the field for the 2nd half of the season. That put more pressure on Brodie Croyle, the team’s QB of the future who was given the starter’s job in November. Croyle struggled during the team’s slide, throwing just 6 TD passes and getting picked off 6 times, while posting a QB rating of only 69.9. A weak offensive line won’t help Croyle much this season either, but at least he has a couple of good targets in WR Dwayne Bowe and TE Tony Gonzalez.
The Chiefs’ defense kept them in games last year, as they only allowed more than 30 points twice over that brutal 9-game skid. That could change for the worse with Allen dealt to the Vikings. KC, though, did manage to get highly touted defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey with the 5th overall pick in the draft, and he’s expected to contribute right away. Dorsey won’t cure everything for the Chiefs, but he does give them a building block as they try to shake off their disastrous 2007 campaign.
