Jacksonville Jaguars
2007 Record: 11-5
ATS: 11-5
Super Bowl Odds: 14-1
The Jaguars play in the shadow of the Colts in the AFC South division, but they made it just as far as their rival in the postseason last year. Jacksonville once again fell short in the division standings during the regular season, posting an 11-5 mark to end up 2 games behind Indianapolis. However, the Jaguars then slipped past the Steelers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs before bowing out to the Patriots in the 2nd round. That’s not a bad result – especially considering that the Pats only lost once all season – but do the Jaguars have the personnel to go deeper into the playoffs this time around?
Well, they at least think they have QB to take them there. David Garrard was deadly accurate as the Jags’ starting QB in 2007, tossing 18 TD strikes and only being intercepted 3 times en route to a QB rating of 102.2, 3rd best in the league. Jacksonville also went out & picked up some new targets for Garrard in the offseason, with Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson upgrading the team’s talent at WR. Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew will again form a tandem in the backfield. Taylor led the team in rush yards in 2007, while Jones-Drew ran for 9 scores.
Defensively the Jaguars were in the middle of the pack in the AFC last season, and they’re hoping that the pair of defensive ends that they picked up in the draft (Derrick Harvey & Quentin Groves) can make an immediate impact. Jacksonville also brought in the CB Drayton Florence to bolster the secondary. The Jags should again be one of the top teams in the AFC, but the Colts and Pats still stand in their way
