Houston Texans
2007 Record: 8-8
ATS: 8-8
Super Bowl Odds: 75-1
The playoffs are still just a rumor in Houston, but the Texans did manage to finish with a .500 record last season. That wasn’t enough to get them into the postseason for the first time- in fact, it wasn’t even enough for them to avoid the basement of the tough AFC South division. However, it does give head coach Gary Kubiak and company some hope that 2008 will be the year that the franchise finally puts it all together. Leading the charge for Houston again this season will be QB Matt Schaub – assuming he can stay healthy.
Schaub was limited to just 11 games in his 1st season in Texas, but he threw for over 2200 yards and posted a passer rating of 87.2. Schaub did only manage to toss 9 TD Strikes last season (to go along with 9interceptions), but top target Andre Johnson was also limited by injuries. Johnson is still recovering from knee surgery, but he should be ready for camp. RB Ahman Green only managed to play 6 games last year; he’ll be paired with free agent signee Christ Brown in Houston’s backfield in 2008.
Defensively the Texans weren’t on par with their division rivals last year, but defensive end Mario Williams started to look like a first overall draft pick. That unit, though, will be missing CB Dunta Robinson for at least the first part of the season as he recovers from serious hamstring and knee injuries. With 6 games against the Colts, Jaguars, and Titans making the postseason won’t be an easy task for Houston, but at the very least the franchise is on the road to respectability.
