The start to the Atlanta Falcons' season could not have been worse. The situation that took place with Michael Vick was a blow to the franchise that could conceivably set the Falcons back 3-5 years. That situation went a long way in factoring into a disappointing 4-12 record (8-8 against the spread). Atlanta finished 29th in overall defense while giving up 5.5 yards per play. They also gave up 48 passes of 20 plus yards, 3rd most in the league. Owner Arthur Blank has decided that it was time to fix the Falcons and hired new head coach Mike Smith. With 11 picks in the draft, the Falcons came out of the gate looking to improve their passing game and drafted Matt Ryan with their first pick.

Where the Falcons really did work in the draft was in rebuilding one of the leagues worst defenses. Not all of the picks will work out, of course, but the draft selections coupled with free agent acquisitions should improve this team. The big off season acquisition was RB Michael Turner, who spent his first four seasons backing up LT in San Diego. While the Falcons have nothing to lose in giving Ryan the reins to the team right out of the gate, you could see him backing up Chris Redman and the re-signed Joey Harrington. The Falcons could improve in the win column in 2008 if they can get the franchise back on track. They should be a good choice for over bettors once again after posting a 9-7 o/u record in 2007.
