| The New Orleans Saints, in what has been a very active off-season, pulled another shocker this week by trading for disgruntled New York Giants’ tight-end Jeremy Shockey. How big of an acquisition will Shockey be for the Saints? Let’s put it into perspective for a moment. On draft day one of the biggest rumors was that New Orleans was looking to trade draft picks in order to acquire Shockey. The Giants turned them down. What did the Saints do? They traded draft picks to move up in the draft to get Sedrick Ellis one of the top two defensive linemen in the 2008 NFL Draft. Then, with their second round pick, one of the picks they were offering for Shockey, the Saints drafted Tracey Porter a highly-touted defensive back from Indiana. Both Ellis and Porter immediately become part of a Saints’ defense that had already improved due to the arrival of Jonathan Vilma, in a trade with the New York Jets, and Randall Gay, formerly with the New England Patriots. The Saint’s signed Gay in free agency. The Saints now just acquired the player that they coveted on draft day, tight-end Jeremy Shockey, and still managed to upgrade their defense through the draft! So, yes, acquiring Shockey is absolutely huge for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints now start a Pro-Bowler at tight-end and have two very serviceable back-ups at the position. All three of the Saint’s tight-ends can block, including Shockey, and all three are adept at catching the ball downfield. Shockey, of course, brings a type of athleticism to the position that the Saints were lacking. Drew Brees is going to love the guy. But for BetUS online NFL betting fans, does the Shockey acquisition change the chances of the New Orleans Saints in terms of their online betting value? Let’s take a look! To Win the Super Bowl - - The football gambling odds on the New Orleans Saints to win the Super Bowl are 25 to 1. I expect these odds to drop dramatically once online wagering fans begin to hear about how well Jonathan Vilma is doing in his off-season work-outs. Once training camp starts, and the word spreads about how much better that Saints’ defense has become, the odds will drop sharply. If Shockey remains healthy he gives the Saints another target for superstar quarterback Drew Brees. Because running back Pierre Thomas has improved so much this off-season, Shockey and Reggie Bush could both split-out on the wings. Imagine trying to guard that in the secondary! Jump on these overlaid betting odds of 25 to 1. To Win NFC South - - The NFL odds are on the low side at + 120 and at those online wagering odds, I’m not sure I can really take the Saints. Yes, I love this team to win the NFC South, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could pull a fast one by acquiring Brett Favre (see my article on their chances this season!) and that could really compromise the Saints. The Bucs know how to beat the Saints. They always have. The odds are too low. The Saints could just as well get into the playoffs as a wildcard and make it to the Super Bowl. To Win the NFC Championship - - The BetUS online NFL betting odds has New Orleans listed as 8 to 1. The odds are fair since the Saints are just as good, on paper, as the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, my gut tells me that the Saints offense should be better than the Cowboys’ offense and I’ve never liked Roy Williams in coverage situations in that Cowboys’ secondary. I’d have to say that this is an online football betting wager worth making. The Saints should be in the NFC Championship game, if everybody stays healthy, this season. That makes the Saints an overlay at the 8 to 1 online betting odds. Regular Season Wins - - 8 ½ Over – 170 - - 8 ½ Under + 130 - - This is actually a no-brainer. Unless the injury bug hits the Saints hard, this team has no business losing more than six games this season. They are just too good on offense, too good on the defensive line, and they’ve improved enough in their secondary to play Cover 2 most of the game. BetUS online sportsbook fans are going to have to put up an extra 70 bucks to make a hundred on this wager, but it’s worth it. This team should really do some damage in the weak NFC this season.
