NFL Football Futures Betting - Vikings in the Super Bowl? What?
The BetUS online sportsbook football betting odds on the Minnesota Vikings to win the 2008 – 2009 Super Bowl are 22 to 1. Some NFL wagering fans look at those sportsbook NFL odds and think to themselves, “Gee, those odds are pretty high. I’d better get down on the Vikings right now!”
I’m not one of those online betting fans. The truth about the Vikings is that even though they have made some notable changes on both sides of the ball, the team isn’t anywhere close to getting over the hump and making it to the Super Bowl. The theory that the Minnesota Vikings have improved enough to win the Super Bowl is based on other theories that, when broken down, make absolutely no sense.
I’m going to go through some of those theories right now. BetUS online sportsbook football wagering fans had better take notice because the Minnesota Vikings, due to all of the hype, are in position to hurt a lot of bankrolls this season.
Theory: With an improved defense the Minnesota Vikings will shut-down NFC North opponents’ offenses, heck, every team in the NFC’s offense, and coast to the top seed in the NFC Conference playoffs.
There is some validity to this theory but the fact is that Madieu Williams, signed by the Vikings to start at free safety, comes from the Cincinnati Bengals. I can’t remember the last time a defensive player signed from the Bengals made any sort of impact. Darren Sharper is too old to do things at strong safety. Jared Allen, the top sack leader from last year, probably won’t have the same season this year as he did with the K.C. Chiefs last season and Chad Greenway in the linebacker position - - well, how good is this guy? New Orleans, Dallas, the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers all figure to have a top ten offense. Minnesota’s defense is going to have to be downright great to stop those teams from getting into the end zone.
Theory: Running back Adrian Petersen was awesome last season. With a season under his belt, he’s going to be even better this season - - enough for the Vikings to get to the Super Bowl.
I sort of believe that the opposite is true. Petersen was awesome last year, but his instincts and ability will only take him so far in this league. Yes, the Vikings have a terrific offensive line. Yes, they have Chester Taylor to take some pressure off of Petersen but the truth is that Adrian will have to be Superman to get this team to the Super Bowl. Teams will be keying on Petersen every time he enters the game. That means that the pressure, once again, will fall on the shoulder’s of Tarvaris Jackson. I’ll get to him soon. Let’s just say that running backs in the NFL rarely improve in their second season because defenses figure out how to take them out of the game. The good teams in the NFC know who Adrian Petersen is now. They won’t let him run like a madman over them again. That’s not to say he doesn’t get 1500 to 1800 yards this season. It’s just to say that his impact will not be nearly as great as some think. Lest we forget, LaDanian Tomlinson hasn’t taken the Chargers to the Super Bowl yet. Petersen is still a running back. Running backs do not carry teams to the Superbowl XLIII.
Theory: Bernard Berrian is exactly what the Vikings need to cure their wide receiver ills. He will help the Vikings get over that hump and make it to the Super Bowl.
Bernard is a good wide receiver but I do not think he is in a position to put up Joe Horn like free agent numbers. First, Horn was a route runner with exceptional speed. When he got to the Saints in the late 1990’s it was just a matter of time before he blossomed into a brilliant free agent wide receiver pick-up. More often then not Bernard tries to get behind the defense and then make a spectacular catch. He was often open when he was with the Bears, but that’s because Rex Grossman couldn’t get him the ball and opposing defenses knew that. Hey, wait, Tarvaris Jackson might not be able to get him the ball either. Okay, Bernard might be open for most of the season. Turning that space into touchdowns is another question. Wide receivers need someone to throw them the ball. Romo has trouble getting the ball to T.O. at times. Carson Palmer has trouble getting the ball to Ocho Cinco at times. Uh…Jackson to Berrian? Yeah. I’m not drinking the purple Kool-Aid.
Theory: Tarvaris Jackson has improved enough to take this team to the Super Bowl. Besides, you don’t need good quarterback play to win a Super Bowl, right?
First, the theory that you do not need a good quarterback to win the Super Bowl is ridiculous. Yes, the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl in the late 1990’s with Trent Dilfer. Of course, the quarterback for the Giants, the team that they faced in that Super Bowl, was Kerry Collins. So…who was better in that match-up? Exactly. Now, I’m not saying that Tom Brady or Peyton Manning has to be in charge of your team for you to win a Super Bowl, but I am saying that your quarterback has to be good. Brad Johnson was a good quarterback who put up decent numbers when he led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the SuperBowl the year Chucky couldn’t stop grinning. So this idea that the QB doesn’t matter is stupid.
Now, as far as Tarvaris is concerned improvement won’t be enough. The man is going to have to turn into Fran Tarkenton overnight. Why? Because the NFC Conference is too tough, and too loaded with good quarterbacks, for this team to skate through with Tarvaris “not making a mistake” all the way to the Super Bowl. Nothing against Tarvaris, but from what I saw last year, the Viking coaches would have to turn him into the Six Million Dollar Man for me to believe that he’s going to improve enough to take the Vikings to the Bowl.
There you have it. The BetUS online sportsbook betting odds on the Vikings to win the Super Bowl right now are 22 to 1. That makes then an underlay in my book.
I’m staying away.
