The Celtics are still the favorite to win the East in our latest odds. With the playoffs about to start, this is the perfect time to place your bets for the postseason.
Here’s a look at the latest odds to win the East Conference.
Boston Celtics (2:7)
Boston has been the best team in the NBA from ‘box to wire’ and they play a level of defense, anchored by Kevin Garnett, that’s good enough to win the conference and the NBA championship. The Celtics’ bench has been underrated all season, but their chances all boil down to how the ‘Big 3’of Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen play during crunch time.
Detroit Pistons (2:1)
Detroit gave their starters a lot of rest towards the end of the season, but they are a veteran group that will be ready for the start of the playoffs. The Pistons are an extremely confident team who believe they should be the favorite over Boston. That might be a bit of an overstatement, but Detroit is great value at these 2:1 odds.
Cleveland Cavaliers (8:1)
The defending Eastern Conference champs had a makeover in February in order to provide superstar, LeBron James enough support to win a title. However, the Cavs have hovered around .500 since Ben Wallace, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak came aboard, and there’s a question of how much James has left in the tank after being 3rd in the league in minutes played.
Orlando Magic (10:1)
Orlando has been the third best team in the East this year, but the fact their odds are behind fourth seeded Cleveland says a lot. The good news is that Orlando does have some playoff experience, albeit a first round sweep by Detroit last year and they have the most dominant big man in the conference in Dwight Howard.
Washington Wizards (20:1)
Washington opens up the playoffs against Cleveland, the team that knocked them out of the postseason the last two years. Those losses have not deterred guard Gilbert Arenas, as he said the Cavs are a team ‘they are comfortable playing in the first round”. Those comments seem unnecessary, but this is a talented and underrated team who provides good value of these odds.
Toronto Raptors (35:1)
Toronto is one of the more unknown teams in the NBA as they play north of the border and they have lots of foreign players that people are unfamiliar with. This squad will only go as far as power forward Chris Bosh will take them, but he’s a legitimate All-NBA player. Now, the Raptors must find a way to improve on their 9-15 record since March 1st.
Philadelphia 76ers (35:1)
Philadelphia played great basketball the second half of the season after starting the year at 16-28. The 76ers are a dangerous team because they have a veteran point guard in Andre Miller, an emerging superstar in forward Andre Iguodala, and a rebounder/shot blocker in center Samuel Dalembert. That said, this team is still at least a year away from contending.
Atlanta Hawks (75:1)
Atlanta is making their first playoff appearance since 1999 despite playing well below .500 ball. That’s the advantage of playing in the Eastern Conference this year. The Hawks have a lot of talented but young players that are just happy to be in the playoffs. That’s why these huge longshot odds seem just about right.
