The Lakers (41-17, 37-19-1 ATS) entered the weekend off a 106-88 Thursday night home win over Miami, covering the 13-point spread in the process. Kobe Bryant continues to defy all the critics who thought his finger injury would derail him. Bryant had 21 points versus the Heat and was aided by Jordan Farmar’s 24 off the bench.
Los Angeles’ recent play has made them the class of the Western Conference according to the betting public. Sportsbook.com has the Lakers at 13:10 to win the West followed by San Antonio (11:5), Phoenix (3:1) and these Mavericks (6:1).
If there’s one question mark about L.A. it’s their recent level of competition. There have been a lot of cupcake games during their streak, although the team has done a great job of not playing to the level of their competition and continuing to cover spreads.
A big reason for that has been the acquisition of Pau Gasol. The whole city of Los Angeles believes this team is now talented enough to win a title, and it’s made Bryant a much happier player as well. When center Andrew Bynum is added to the mix later this month, there could be no stopping this team.
For Dallas (38-20, 24-31-3 ATS), newly acquired point guard Jason Kidd is supposed to be the missing piece in their championship run. So far, they are 3-2 with him in the lineup, and 3-2 ATS.
The Mavericks last road game was a 97-94 Thursday night loss to San Antonio. This was a game that could have gone either way and Dallas did cover the five-point spread. Tim Duncan led the way for the Spurs with 31 points and Manu Ginobili added 17. For Dallas, Dirk Nowitzki paced the team with 28 points and Kidd added 10 assists.
Kidd is one of the best playmakers in all of basketball but it takes some time for teammates to get completely adjusted to a new ballhandler, especially one who makes a lot of difficult passes like Kidd.
The Mavericks have also been dealing with some depth issues, and they are hoping the recent signing of center Jamaal Magloire with help out against L.A. If anything, he gives the team another big body to use some up some minutes and fouls against Gasol.
Dallas knows this will be another great test for them and they are certainly capable of pulling off the small upset.
