Several Eastern teams are going to be in the playoffs whether they deserve it or not. Might as well handicap them now.
David Stern simply has to figure this thing out.
On the same day where three teams - the Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks - were all battling for the last Western Conference playoff spot with identical 45-28 records, the Atlanta Hawks were 3.5 games clear of New Jersey for the last spot in the East.
The problem? Atlanta is 34-40. The Hawks are six full games under .500.
As things continue to progress, the likelihood that a 50-win team will miss the playoffs increases. And so do the chances of a team with a losing record getting in.
