The favorites figure to be Kyle Busch, the early season’s dominant driver, and Jimmie Johnson, always known as the man to beat at Lowe’s Motor Speedway since his car’s primary sponsor shares the name of the facility.
Johnson has been nothing short of dominant in Charlotte throughout his career. In addition to several Cup series wins here, he has two All-Star triumphs to boast. However, don’t forget about Kevin Harvick, the defending champion, and Jeff Gordon, a three-time winner.
Interestingly, Humpy Wheeler, president of Lowe's Motor Speedway, made Carl Edwards the favorite to win the All-Star race by naming the acrobatic driver his pick to win Saturday night's event. Wheeler was an expert prognosticator when he first started making the picks, as Wheeler was correct on six of seven winners from 1989-95. But he's been right only twice since, correctly selecting Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2000 and Johnson in 2003. He also chose Edwards in 2006, but he finished fourth that year.
Edwards has three victories this season, two of which came on 1.5-mile tracks similar to Lowe's layout. And he had the car to beat in Atlanta, another track similar to Lowe's, but his motor failed and Busch went on to win the race. Edwards expects Busch, Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be among his main contenders for the win.
Wheeler also named Stewart, who is winless so far this season, his dark horse selection. Of course, underdogs like Mark Martin and Denny Hamlin will pay out handsomely should they take home the checkered flag.
The race on Saturday is both exciting and interesting in that it is run with what is expected to be a 24-driver field and in segments.
For that reason, a lot of strategy goes into the planning for the race and gives underdogs a great shot at winning. The uniqueness of this event makes it must see TV on Saturday night. It therefore becomes must-bet as well.
