| NASCAR: Pennsylvania 500 Kasey Kahne returns to Pocono Raceway as the 5-1 favorite after having won here in June. The driver of the #9 Dodger capped a four week stretch in which he reached victory lane three times with his victory in Pocono just weeks ago. While he hasn’t won since, oddsmakers like his chances to win the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 on Sunday. Both run on long, flat superspeedways, race experts typically point to the June Pocono race and the Brickyard 400 as prime information to consider when analyzing this race. Unfortunately, last week’s tire issues at Indianapolis have minimized the effectiveness of that formula. In fact, it’s pretty tough to pull anything of value from last week’s Brickyard debacle. Still, you won’t hear Jimmie Johnson complaining. He took home the checkered flag, his second at Indy, and will look to make it two in a row when he runs on Sunday as a 6-1 bet to win. Johnson ran 6th at Pocono in June, and was one of the stronger cars on the track that day along with Denny Hamlin (6-1), Carl Edwards (7-1), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (12-1). You’re likely to find this week’s winner among the aforementioned group of five drivers. When looking at this week’s key stats, Hamlin leads the way with an average Pocono finish of 2.8 in five prior starts. He has scored two wins and two other Top 5’s in that stretch. Jeff Gordon and Johnson are next in line in terms of average finish at 10.3. Gordon has started at Pocono 31 times previously, bringing home four trophies and finishing in the Top 5 in nearly half of those 15 starts. Johnson will be making his 14th Pocono start, looking for his third win. Mark Martin is among the most successful Pocono racers as well, having finished in the Top 5 here on 19 previous occasions. Among those that have struggled at this facility, which sports the only triangular 2 ½-mile layout on the circuit, are Kyle Busch (20.0 avg. finish), Greg Biffle (18.8 avg. finish, 1 Top 5 in 11 starts), and Clint Bowyer (23.8). Keep in mind that no one who has started 30th or worse has won a race here. That fact could have a huge impact when Sunday’s race comes around at 2:10 pm ET.
