MLB: Perfect pitchers meet in primetime duel

Cliff Lee has been money in the bank for Cleveland Indians backers; his counterpart on Wednesday has been the same for New York Yankee supporters.

Watch as Lee and Chien-Ming Wang go head-to-head in a pitcher’s duel between a pair of hurlers that have yet to lose a start this season.

It was an opening month to remember for lefty Cliff Lee. The Cleveland Indians’ pitcher has been the biggest surprise in baseball, going 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA and 32 strikeouts in five starts.

No-one saw this kind of production coming from the six-year veteran who had just five wins all of last year. For the entire 2007 season, Lee went 5-8 with a 6.29 ERA in 19 appearances.

In his five starts this year, Lee has pitched 37 2/3 innings, given up just 19 hits, four earned runs and just two base on balls. He pitched a complete game shutout versus Kansas City back on April 24th and eight shutout innings before leaving his April 18th start against Minnesota.

Lee’s start against the Yankees will be his first since the 2006 season when he went six innings, gave up 10 hits and seven runs, four earned, in a 10-4 loss.

Yankee bettors are always excited when Wang takes the mound. The staff ace is 6-0 in seven starts this season, including pitching seven innings of shutout ball in a 1-0 win over the Indians less than two weeks ago. The Indians managed just four hits against Wang while nine batters struck out.

It was a solid outing for Wang, who struggled against the Indians in last year’s playoff series. Wang, who didn’t face Cleveland at all in the 2007 regular season, went to the mound twice in last year’s playoffs and lasted just 5 2/3 innings, giving up 14 hits and 12 earned runs in his two appearances. He also gave up three homers and struck out just two batters.

His postseason performance was so bad that many wondered how the star from Taiwan would rebound this season. Wang has obviously put his playoff woes to the side and he’s been cashing in for bettors every time out as New York has never lost when he’s pitched this season.

In his seven starts, Wang has a 3.00 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched. Just as impressive is the fact that he’s given up just one home run to this point.

Both of these teams have struggled offensively and with Lee and Wang on the mound, this could be a low-scoring game.

The Indians are 21st in the Majors with 4.26 runs per game and they’re 23rd with just 22 home runs.

The Yankees score 4.48 runs per game, 17th in MLB, and rank 12th in the Majors with 33 homers.
