| MLB: Suppan searching for second win Jeff Suppan hasn’t suffered defeat this season but the Milwaukee Brewers pitcher hasn’t tasted victory much in his five starts either. Suppan, who opened his season with a victory at Wrigley Field, returns to Chicago in search of his second win of the year as the Brewers face the Chicago Cubs in the second of a three-game series. Catch the Brewers and Cubs on ESPN beginning at 8 pm ET. Make sure you view all our MLB odds, trends and stats before placing your bets. Suppan deserves better than a 1-0 record at this point of the season. In three of his starts that resulted in a no-decision, Suppan threw at least 6 2/3 innings and gave up just four runs combined in those starts. A lack of production from the Brewers’ bats has kept the former NLCS MVP from collecting wins despite a number of very solid outings. Milwaukee’s cold bats have been one of the surprises in Major League Baseball to this point. The Brewers led the league in home runs last season with 231 and were fourth in total bases. They were also fifth in the NL with 801 runs. So far, the Brewers rank 12th of 16 National League teams with 111 runs this season and their 23 home runs put them 8th in the league. Despite their struggles, the Brewers entered last night’s series opener with a 14-11 record. Slugging first baseman, Prince Fielder, is starting to emerge from his slump and has three home runs in his last five games after failing to hit one in the first 14 games of the season. Left fielder Ryan Braun is also starting to heat up with 10 hits in his last seven games. The Brewers will be going up against Cubs’ pitcher Ryan Dempster. Dempster enters with a 3-0 record in five starts, including a 6-3 victory over the Brewers in the opening series of the season. The Cubs’ former closer, Dempster has had a great start in his return to the starting rotation. The right-hander has pitched 31 innings, struck out 21 batters and has a 2.90 ERA in five starts. In his start against the Brewers, Dempster went six innings, giving up just two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. The Cubs offense will be looking to get Dempster some run support and that hasn’t been a problem this season. Chicago is second in the Majors with an average of 5.8 runs per game. They lead MLB with a .810 OPS while the .280 team batting average puts them fourth. This is a huge series for both teams early in the season as the Brewers need to gain ground on the division leading Cubs, 16-9 going into Tuesday night’s game. Both teams are expected to compete for the NL Central title all season long and the Brewers don’t want to let the Cubs widen the game too much this early in the season.
